How crews cut GFRP rebar

Do not cut GFRP in a rebar shear or with a cutting torch. The shear crushes the fibre. Flame destroys the resin. A diamond or abrasive cutoff wheel on a circular saw or chop saw is the usual method.

Cutting makes fine glass dust. Crews need a dust mask, eye protection and gloves, and the cut should not be done in a closed room. Wet cutting lowers the dust. Bind the cut end if the drawing or the manufacturer’s handling note asks for it.

This is site practice, not a method statement for your project. Follow the engineer’s specification and your own safety rules. If you are unsure which blade your crew has, ask us before the first bar is cut.
